Roland “Rollie” Rahn was a long time member of UUCWC and co-chair of the church’s Food Ministry. Rollie was passionate about the Food Ministry’s service to HomeFront. He firmly believed that in this land of plenty, no one should ever go hungry. Upon his passing in October 2015, Rollie’s family requested that memorial donations be given to the Food Ministry. Thanks to the generosity of Rollie’s friends and family over $7,000 has been raised. Knowing Rollie’s passion for service to the community, a plan was developed to provide financial support for HomeFront clients and programs associated with HomeFront’s training kitchen and nutrition program.
The Memorial Fund Administrators, the Rahn family and the UUCWC Food Ministry will be charged with dispersing the funds. It was determined that the Memorial Fund will provide an unspecified number of grants, with a cumulative maximum of $1,000 per year. The tentative initial effective date of the program will be July 1, 2017 and will continue annually, based on availability of funding.
The Memorial Fund Administrators will work with HomeFront to identify and qualify applicants who are HomeFront personnel or clients. Funds may be allocated for any of the following:
- Tuition/fees to a culinary arts program at an adult vocational school or community college leading to a career in the culinary arts.
- Programs/services/presentations which enhance the training kitchen/nutrition program already in place at the Family Center.
- Certification programs for individuals or HomeFront (e.g., Serve Safe certification)
It is up to all of us at UUCWC to insure that Rollie’s legacy continues. Thank you for the generosity and support you have shown for the UUCWC Food Ministry.
Six years, 13,000 meals – and counting. Rollie would be proud.
