UUCWC welcomes guest musician Michal Schmidt to Sunday services on April 7th.
Israeli musician Michal Schmidt has been a cellist and pianist throughout her career. She was born in Israel, studied at the University of Tel Aviv, the Royal Academy of Music in London, the Curtis Institute of Music, the University of the Arts, and did her doctoral studies at Temple University, gaining a DMA degree in 2002.
Michal has been an active musician as an orchestral player, chamber musician and recitalist. She created the series Tribute, which has been ongoing since 2007 and is dedicated mostly to contemporary music composed by friends of hers. (Her disc SOLA, which came out in 2021 includes many of the contemporary works performed in the Tribute series). In that series Michal included special performances dedictated to past and present composers’ special anniversaries. These included a marathon of Beethoven’s cello sonatas, a marathon of Brahms’ cello sonatas and violin sonatas, performances and recordings of Beethoven’s violin sonatas, Schubert and Schumann evenings of vocal and chamber music and a very versatile event dedicated to the music of Philadelphia composer Andrea Clearfield, which included vocal, instrumental and dance music.
