Racial Justice Ministry Virtual Forum

“Setting future expectations for peaceful protesting, agitation and long term change.”

Recent research shows that more than 90% of racial justice protests in 2020 have been peaceful and have succeeded in bringing together people and color and white allies in new and productive ways. This is being seen as a major accomplishment and turning point in the racial justice movement.

This success is being challenged by a smaller but more violent and at times destructive form of protests, looting and “rioting”. The violence has also taken center stage in the Presidential Campaign, especially among the GOP. According to one commentator: “We have lost the narrative about racial justice and it has turned into a law & order agenda.”

RJM is sponsoring a small group, facilitated virtual discussion forum on the following questions:

  • How would you characterize the impact of the protests to date? What is the ultimate desired outcome?
  • Share your understanding about the violent protests also underway – are they ever warranted, useful, integral to protesting? Where is the line?
  • How do we take back the narrative and declare incremental victory?
  • What next? Do we switch completely, add on, transition to other strategies in the days ahead?
    • What individual and collective strategies make the most sense for us as a community and as members of UUCWC?
