Rollie Rahn, UUCWC cherished member for many years and who died in 2015, was devoted to the Food Ministry, to HomeFront and to service to the church in countless ways. As all who knew him, Rollie had a passion for cooking. When Rollie passed, his wife and daughters, Lori, Renae and Natalie Rahn established, within the Food Ministry, a scholarship fund to support young adults seeking to pursue education in the culinary arts. On June 2nd, the first scholarship from the fund was presented to Isis Monzon, a graduating senior from Trenton Central High School (TCHS) during the TCHS Annual Awards Night ceremony. Renae Rahn and Bernie Ruekgauer represented UUCWC, the Food Ministry and the Rahn family during the awards ceremony. Renae presented the award to Ms. Monzon. Renae’s comments can be read below.

My name is Renae Rahn and I am here to present the Roland Rahn Memorial Fund Scholarship to Isis Monzon. Roland Rahn was my father and had a passion for cooking and feeding his friends and family. It made him happy and was his way of showing us his love. As a long time member of the Unitarian Universalist Church at Washington Crossing he used that skill and passion to co-chair the Food Ministry and feed many people in need. Upon his death in 2015, through donations to the Food Ministry, my family – which includes my mother Lori Rahn and my sister Natalie Rahn – established this fund to support individuals pursuing education in the culinary arts.

Based upon her personal statement, academic achievements and letter of recommendation, we believe Isis Monzon is the perfect person to be the first recipient of this Scholarship. She has demonstrated a passion for cooking and worked hard to get where she is today. I love that she has stated that cooking is a way to deal with her emotions and that she gets a warm feeling when serving a delicious meal, just as my Dad did. Her goal of giving underprivileged students and children an opportunity to also pursue a career in this field is right in line with my Dad’s principles of helping others. We look forward to the day we can sample one of her dishes as a new young chef.

Isis Monzon, on behalf of my family and the Food Ministry at the Unitarian Universalist Church at Washington Crossing, we present to you the Roland Rahn Memorial Scholarship. We hope that this scholarship will help you reach your goals as you attend Mercer County College next year to pursue an Associate’s Degree in the Culinary Arts. You are a very deserving young woman and we wish you the best of luck!
