There’s a story about a woman in London who goes to the underground station every day to listen to the recorded announcement to “Mind the Gap” (the space between the train and the platform). It’s her husband’s voice, recorded in 1950, and after his death, she found that listening to it was a way to feel his presence. But London Transport replaced his voice with an electronic one. Distressed, she asked for a copy of the recording so she could continue hearing her husband’s voice. The subway company instead decided to restore the announcement at the stop near the woman’s home.
These days, your Stewardship team is minding the gap between our end-of-year giving goal of $25,000 and our current Giving Thanks donation total of $19,928.04 (as of December 12th). If you’ve already made your annual gift, thank you. If you haven’t, please take a moment to donate.
Reasons to Be Thankful
The Stewardship team received two wonderful responses from UUCWC members to our invitation to give thanks. Here’s what two anonymous members, including one couple, had to say.
“We are in awe of such a generous community, giving time, treasure, and passion through tough times and coming out the other side with an openness and joy to the future. We can’t imagine a world without this community with all its facets woven into our spiritual psyches. What joy.”
“Thank you, UUCWC, for the freedom to find my own truths and the challenge to reexamine them constantly. The community of amazing citizens who support me in my personal and spiritual journey. The invitation to engage in whatever nourishes me. The opportunities to give of self, in the words of Mary Oliver, ‘…until the giving feels like receiving.’ The many avenues for personal and spiritual growth – Racial Justice Ministry, Racial Justice as a Spiritual Practice, Pastoral Care, Chalice Circle, Breathe, Lectio Divina, Romeos, RE, Potlucks, etc. The gift of an incredible, caring, supportive staff.”
